What Captures My Attention During the Holidays

I know that my mind wanders to all the planning of gifts and family and friend get-togethers all to often during the holidays. Of course some thought and attention on those things is a good thing that is expected during this time, but I want to focus more of my time and thought towards the true meaning of the season: Christ's birth.

I am so thankful for God sending his only Son to save the world. So why don't I focus more of my thoughts to that during the holidays? There is too much junk that clouds my view. All the presents, gift giving, get-togethers, and commericial hype of the season fight hard to hide the real meaning of the season.

This year, I would like to change that. Many of you already have advent calendars in your home, and I'm totally impressed by the creativity you expressed with that. I did some searching on Pinterest for a homemade advent calendar and discovered a handful of ideas. My favorite one was built with twigs and tiny paper bags with the 24 days leading up to Christmas stamped on each bag.

What do you think of this one? This advent calendar is very country esque. I also have most of the materials at my finger tips which definitely helps save money this time of the year.

Do you have an advent calendar at home? Have any creative ideas for me? I would love to see your different takes on the advent calendar!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!! This day has been filled with family and food like it should be. I'm celebrating with my mom, my brother, and Bill. We celebrated Thanksgiving with Bill's family, my dad, and brother earlier in the day. I'm thankful for all the time we get to spend together and for all the food.

This time of the year can get hectic with Black Friday Sales, Christmas shopping and planning, and get togethers that accompany the holidays. That's why I love that Thanksgiving is one of the holidays that encourages me to think of all the ways I'm blessed. I like to write a list of what I'm thankful for each year so here it is:

* I love all the time cooking and baking I do with Bill this time of the year. We have so much fun throwing together our favorite treats together.
* I'm truly thankful for God's love and salvation. I couldn't live without God.
* The outings I have with my family this time of the year. I'm currently looking forward to venturing out to Chicago to go to the German Christmas Market and buying a special ornament from the shop.
* I'm thankful for all the material things I've been blessed with such as: my skirts from Kristen, my favorite scarfs, a warm bed and cozy house, and a purple Coach purse.
* Our cute family dog, Kitty, who always greets us warmly with an abundance of affection.
* I'm thankful for exercise and how good the endorphins feel afterwards.
* For all of the traveling I've done this year. Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Gulf Coast of Mississippi, and Vegas were all great vacation spots.
* Lastly, I'm thankful from the love from Bill and my family and friends.

I want you all to know, I'm thankful for you guys who read my blog. You make blogging that much more enjoyable!

Hope you're having a wonderful Thanksgiving! I'll be back to document my trip. ;)

Ready for Vegas!

Tomorrow will be the first time I step foot in Vegas! We're going for Tom's 21st birthday! I can't wait to explore the desert, the Hoover Dam, and of course some casinos. I heard from Bill that the best part of the casinos are the free drinks. Neither of us are big fans of gambling. We like to stick to the five cent machines mostly and waste away a couple of hours on $5 alone.

I'm looking forward to swimming in the pool and hot tub the most. After we get back from the trip, I plan to divulge in some holiday baking and cooking, watch Christmas movies with the fam, spend some time Christmas shopping with my brother, and enjoy Thanksgiving with everyone. I'm equally as excited for Thanksgiving and all the events surrounding the holiday as I am for Vegas! Shh.. Don't tell anyone. :)

Hope you have a fun weekend! Also, if you have some time check out this book on Thanksgiving. I will be reading it on the plane.

Recap on Harvest Season

Last night, Bill, Bill Sr. (Bill's dad), and Tom (Bill's brother), finished combining. They are all done with harvest! Bill Sr. came in really elated last night at the farm. He was so happy to have everything in from the fields.

Thirty minutes before they finished, he had come in the farm house in a panic because it was going to rain. Fortunately, the rain held off long enough for my Bill to pull the rest of the beans in from the very last field.  These pictures above were from September. I've been wanting to share more of my harvest pictures but haven't done it until now. :) I will post a few more from my phone next week. I love how pretty the fields look during the fall.

Now that harvest is over, I'm sad I won't ride in the combine with Bill anymore. I rode with him a handful of times but not nearly enough. It's always fun to sit and talk in the cab while combining.

When we were 3 weeks into our relationship, I rode with him in the tractor and while he was cultivating a field. I always think about that when I hop in the combine or a tractor.

It's amazing the good memories that come from each season of farming.

My Favorite Things about my Mom's House During the Holidays

My number one favorite thing about the holidays is spending time with my family at my mom's house. We don't have to do anything special. I simply love being together with Bill and my family.

Upon arriving at my mom's house, I feel completely separate from outside worries and stresses. I can just be me. Sometimes with the stress of the holidays, I need that break and quite relaxation. My mom's house is perfect for that. I love how cozy her house feels. My mom has all of her walls in her house painted in tans, golden, ginger, and rich cherry hues that warmly embrace the spirit of the holiday season.

If the richly colored walls and beautifully decorated rooms weren't enough, the familiar aromas of our favorite holiday dishes spread to the dining room and living room creating anticipation of the moment when dinner will be served. My mom's stuffing, green bean casserole, and strawberry pretzel jello are a few of my favorites.

Movies are also a part of our holiday tradition at my mom's. Home Alone, The Family Stone, The Grinch (with Jim Carey), The Elf, and Love Actually are on repeat in late November and December at our family gatherings. We gather our favorite snack or dessert with our drink of choice that usually includes eggnog or spiced apple cider and sit down to watch our pick of the night. To me, I can't really think of anything better than watching a favorite movie with my special people.

All of our family gatherings wouldn't be the same without our young-at-heart dog, Kitty. Her love and joy brighten every holiday. Plus, who would be there to clean up the scraps of food that fall off the counter and table without our cute little pup?

There aren't many things that I would rather do than be surrounded by my family members. The holidays are that much better with them by my side.

Minka Kelly on Almost Human

Minka Kelly with her dog, Chewy.
Our Family dog, Kittle, looks the exact same and does that foot pose in the picture above.

I recently discovered that Minka Kelly is staring in a new TV show called Almost Human that airs on Sunday at 8p.m. on Fox. I was more than thrilled to set my DVR to record the pilot!

I love Minka Kelly. She's one of those actresses that I greatly admire, and she has almost the same excact dog as my family! How perfect.

In her new show, she plays a human intelligence analyst who works for the police. She describes the show as a cop show featured in the future. Almost Human is set in the year 2048.

I'm not usually drawn to movies or TV shows that are set in the future, but this show has my attentions especially since Minka Kelly is in it. I haven't watched Kelly on TV since Friday Night Lights, and I'm anxious to see her act again.

Are you a fan of Minka Kelly? Who's your favorite actor?

Body Image: I think I'll Wear Skirts All Winter Long

Normally, I wouldn't think twice about wearing pants everyday, but ever since I've ordered Kristen's skirts, I've wanted to wear skirts more and more.

I'm on a skirt kick. Monday, I wore my solid pink skirt with a purple shirt, I repeated the same outfit on Wednesday for dinner with my mom and brother, and today, I wore my knee length polka dot skirt. All this to say, I think I'm feeling more comfortable being femine and girly. I'm also hating my favorite pair of jeans right now.

I wear them for a few hours and then they're too lose in the thighs and butt. It's super annoying to have your pants become too big even if that was the goal in the first place. Although, I would really rather have them be too big than too tight.

I don't know what I would do without my plethora of skirts. They are really coming in handy right about now. My favorites are the thin black chevron striped (pictured above), polka dot (knee length and maxi), my solid pink skirt that I love pairing with a purple shirt, and my thin tan chevron striped skirt.

In an effort to look more put together, I wear a form fitting shirt tucked into my skirt. I love how a good shirt can pull my look together, and I don't mind wearing something that fits tightly to my torso so I don't have a whole outfit that fits too loosely. I think every woman can relate that they don't want to look bigger than they are. That would never be my goal. :)

I'm curious though what has been your go-to item for the fall/winter? Are there any favorites I need to know about?

P.S. This is not a sponsored post. I just need to reiterate how much I love my new skirts from Kristin. She's one of the best seamstresses I know. Click the link or type in Maxi Skirts by Emma Ray on Facebook to check out her skirts! You won't regret it. I promise. :)

Movie Review: About Time didn't Hold a Candle to Love Actually

I initially was curious about the new movie About Time, because I heard that the movie was directed by the same director as Love Actually. I was completely excited about that connection and that left me with little judgement for what the movie was actually about.

My expectations fell extremely hard within the first hour at the movie theater. In the middle of the movie, Bill and I looked at each other and simultaneously complained that nothing was happening! Everything was seemingly perfect. Tim, the main character, found out on his 21st birthday that the men in his family hold the ability to travel back in time, and once he figures out that it is true, he goes back in time to change anything and everything like the outcome of a play performance for his actor friend he lives with. Tim gets caught up with fixing other people's problems that he ends up having to reintroduce himself to his future wife, Mary who is Rachel McAdams, since he went back in time to fix his actor friend's problem and went past his first meeting with Mary.

Besides all the going back in time nonsense, we were especially aggrivated by how perfect the two main characters were. Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) and Mary (Rachel McAdam) were completely flat characters. They had one emotion throughout the movie and that was happy. Nothing made them angry. Even when Tim's sister Kit Kat got in a car accident, he didn't get overly upset or angry. He went back in time to try and stop it, but he wasn't able to save her from getting hurt.

Rachel McAdam's character annoyed me. I found that extremely odd since I love that actress. Let me explain.

Her role as Mary was annoyingly perfect and even sickeningly cute at moments. She was a complete cookie cutter version of what the idealistic girlfriend or wife is supposed to look like. Rachel always looked cute and would wear cute clothes. On top of always being physically perfect, she was never at loss for cute remarks. Her demeanor and banter annoyed me beyond belief.

It is safe to say, I'm not a fan of the "perfect wife" or whatever that means.

I left the movie wondering why they didn't just produce a happy-go-lucky movie without the traveling-back-in-time element. I really thought that they would need a truly good and heroic reason for the main character to travel back in time, but they didn't have any viable reason.

The two hours of complete sappiness almost drowned me and on top of all that, I was left confused about why they chose to give him the ability to travel back in time.

I'll just stick with Love Actually for my holiday movie, since About Time was a complete fail.

New Scarfs Call for New Selfies

Happy Friday, friends!

I'm super excited about all the scarfs I've made the past couple of weeks, and I decided to take a "selfie" to show my favorite one off a little bit. I love the pink fuchsia color and the softness of this one.

My new sewing  hobby has me expanding my repertoire quite a bit. I'm planning on taking a sewing class at Joann Fabric this month. My class is called "Sew a Skirt in an Instant." I'm excited to find out the different tips and tricks I will learn. The skirt I make will be for my mom, and the fabric reminds me of the holidays so it will be a perfect gift.

Tonight, I have something very fun planned. (Life is exciting at the moment. Ha) Bill agreed to go with me to see About Time with Rachel McAdams!! I can't wait to see it, and I'm thrilled that my favorite person will be there with me.

Other than that, I'm happily writing today and reading of course.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

New Hobby: Crocheting

The New Scarf I'm Crocheting.

I've been abandoning my blog lately, since I'm busying with writing for other things. That's not the only reason though. I also have a new hobby...crocheting. I'm currently crocheting the scarf above. I love how it only goes around once, and there is a pretty twist. I'm also planning on crocheting a few Christmas presents, including a golden beard for Bill. :)

I'm obsessed with this new hobby of mine. What do you think? Have you tried crocheting before? Do you have any hobbies you're currently enthralled with at the moment?

My Favorite Tights from Target

Last year, I discovered Target's Merona Premium Women's Opaque Tights and fell in love with them! I love that they are long enough and perfect for my 5'10 frame. These are the only tights that have really fit me.

I've been wearing them with my skirts that I've been getting from Kristen, and they're perfect for them.

What store do you go for tights?

My Sister Turned 25!

Meg, my talented, adventurous, and beautiful sister turned twenty-five on Friday! Of course, I'm sad that I couldn't celebrate with her in person, since she lives in Hawaii. I think we would have gone to a movie and had a dinner party night at my mom's house if she was here. But alas, she was not home.

I talked to her on the phone for a while, and I'm planning on a Skype session tonight.

Meg and I have developed our relationship over the past few years and grew pretty close. She is the adventurous and thrill seeking one. She is also very smart and able to adapt a lot of different situations. Her ability to establish friendships in different places amazes me.

I love how our different traits and personalities complement one other. We can challenge and encourage each other in ways we couldn't if we were the exact same.

I also love that we are finding ways to stay connected by reading a book together.

Meg, I love you a lot!! I really hope you had a wonderful birthday!
