In Honor Of Back To School Week

The week that kids go back to school, I always get nostalgic for my school days. I miss buying the school supplies at Target and figuring out what I would wear for my first day back. There's something so special about having a fresh slate at the beginning of the year. The possibilities seem endless.

Your focus switches from swimming at your favorite pool, movie with friends, and hanging out at home to waking up early for class, school books, and the dreaded or not so dreaded word-homework. I remember in first grade, I asked my teacher for more homework. I loved to learn and stay busy. She had no problem with helping me with that.

Now, that I'm out of college and have no plans of attending grad school, I get excited for different things at the end of August. I start dreaming of pumpkin spice mochas, leaves turning a nice shade of orange and red, apple picking, and maybe, picking up a couple of packs of pens and pencils from Target's school section for old times' sake.

Do you ever find yourself missing your school days? What do you miss most? Although, I have new things that I look forward to at the end of summer, I still think it's perfectly acceptable to indulge in things that made you happy in the past, like a pack of pens.

August Highlights

Left to right:

Going to Kuipers Apple Orchard with my cousin Val. I love looking at everything they have there! Plus, I don't even like doughnuts, but I like there cinnamon ones.

Last week, my mom and I jumped at a chance to go to Raging Waves!! We loved it there. There was hardly any lines because all the kids had just gone back to school. We rode on the tube rides multiple times, laid out in the sandy section, shared a small pizza there, and ran in line one last time on our favorite ride before closing!! We had the best time there! Not to mention, the scenery is really beautiful from the top of the rides. :)

I really need to post some pictures of the all the skirts I've ordered through Kristen, but I do have one of the skirts that I ordered for our niece, Reese. I love her purple diagonal striped skirt. I found Kristen through her cousin who blogs. She makes custom made skirts. I love her soft fabric! There are a lot of choices for different styles of skirts. I can't forget to mention that she has very reasonable prices as well. You can't beat it. I'll post some pictures of my skirts later.

There have been a lot of nights where we sit out by the fire and roast s'mores. This particular night, the moon looked gorgeous, and the white lights were adding extra ambiance.

We made a trip to Wisconsin this month to be with our brother-in-law's family after the passing of his Grandpa. After the funeral, we stopped at Cedarburg, and saw the cutest duck figurines. I want to know how to recreate them.

I made another rhubarb pie. Everything turned out great, except the crust. I cooked it at too high of a temp. I heard that it still tasted fine. ;)

My dad's Christensen family reunion was this month. My dad is on the right and his cousin Phil on the left. Bill and I are now on their mailing list! Ahh.

Lastly, we got to pet some farm animals at Elburn Days this year. I went with my dad during the day and watched the tail end of the truck pulls with him. Then in the evening, I went with Bill and friends to watch the country band that was playing. We ended up running into his parents there as well. It was a good time.

What are your highlights from August or this summer?

Austria Part II: Ehrenberg Castle Ruins

My favorite picture of the castle! That mountains looks so beautiful in the background-it looks fake! ;)

I took these photos with my phone while running around trying to get the best view of the Ehrenberg castles. Our first hike up there was fantastic and exciting. I felt like I was walking into a private home that was weathered and falling apart. The rocks were shifting beneath my feet, and I knew I had to be careful of my footing.

I spent more time looking at every wall and every nook and cranny at the first castle that Bill was already starting on the second hike up to the next castle.  Bill came back down to where I was, and we hiked up to the next castle together. It was a strenuous and exhilarating hike. My heart was pumping out of my chest and my excitement was increasing by the minute. I was thrilled to see that next castle! Another reason for the all the excitement? We were loosing day light by the minute and needed to make it down before sunset. When we got up there, we had an aerial view of the town. I could have sat up there for hours with a cold drink just gazing at everything in sight. Can you tell hiking is one of my favorite things?

Have you ever felt a rush of endorphins from a strenuous workout? Where is your favorite spot to hike at? Personally, I could never have imagined a better hike.

Austria Part I

Going into this trip, I had an idea that I would only favor Italy. I thought that that was the only stop I really wanted to make and wondered why we couldn't just spend our two weeks of vacation there. I was really wrong though! My favorite spot on the trip was Austria, and Germany came in as a close second. I loved the beautiful landscape of the mountains, lush green forests, and the abundance of castles.

King Ludwig's castle was our first stop in Austria. We decided not to go on the paid tour... It was a forty-five minute wait to get the tickets and then maybe an hour or hour and a half wait for your tour to start up. There were two tours. One was 2 hours and the other was 4 hours. It was a very hot summer day and none of us really wanted to wait that long so we didn't go on any official tour.

Even without the tour, we got to walked up to the castle and look at the architecture. I loved hiking up there and finding frogs and snails. I had a great time taking pictures of them along the way.

The views were also amazing. These pictures from Austria are the ones that I treasure the most. Everything we saw there was gorgeous.

After we walked up close to the castle, we took another trail leading towards a bridge that we walked on that gave the best view of the castle. It was breathtaking.

Doesn't it look like a castle from the Disney movies? The similarities are striking.
This picture reminds me of those kids books where you're supposed to find something or pick out what doesn't go with the page. ha Bill seriously cracks me up on a regular basis. He wanted me to take a picture of him where he was standing amongst everyone on the bridge with all the Asian tourists. Such a goof!

King Ludwig's castle (home) that he grew up in.

Later that day, we checked in at the Hotel Moserhof in Reutte, Austria. The Moserhof was really nice and fabulously decorated.

We had a balcony outside our room with an amazing view of the mountains.

We were all pretty starved and tired after hiking for most of the day, but after dinner, we decided to hike up to the Ehrenberg Castle Ruins. They were beyond amazing, and I can't wait to share those pictures with you in another post.

Favorite Braids from Pinterest

I have been waiting for my hair to grow out so I could finally braid it... Now that it's four or five inches past my shoulders, I feel like I'm able to start wearing them. It's a great feeling to have my long hair back! This simple braid has me swooning. I love that half of her hair is pulled back and the braid is adorning the back of her head. Simply gorgeous. I need to try this one out first.

My braid wouldn't be this long, but it would still be a cute length. Part of me wishes, I could press a button and my hair would grow several inches. That would be the life!

I know my hair is long enough to do this crown braid. I'm nervous to try it. I know that Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere tried it out on her blog so I'm kind of dying to do it soon. ha What do you think of the braided crown?

What are your favorite braids lately? Have you tried any of them? :)

Fun at the Tractor Show

Bill in front of his tractor he brought to the show.

I'm not usually a fan of the Tractor show (Or Steam Show. It has a few names. :)), but this year, I really enjoyed it and went twice. The first time, we saw a few different people that we knew. Bill's sisters were there too with their kids. I was drawn to looking at the homemade blankets that a family was making. They had all these different fabrics that they used for the rugs. It was awesome.
The rug I got matches the curtains in our kitchen. I was excited to bring it home. :)
My mom came with last Sunday. It was my second time there and Bill's fourth time. ha We right away walked over to the homemade rugs. I had told her about them and wanted to see if she would like them. Of course, she did. :)

After we scoured through their collection of rugs, we browsed the different vendors looking for anything that stuck out to us. I came across a light purple serving bowl. Normally, I don't really look for anything like that, but I've recently realized that I need a couple of them. I got it for really cheap. Only $5. That was a really nice surprise to find that.

Vegetables were the last thing we got there. I'm planning on putting a bunch of different spices on them and throwing them on the grill for a dinner this week. I guess there were more than a few reasons to go to the tractor show.

New Blog Design is Up!!!

Today felt a lot like Christmas! This afternoon, I saw my new design up on my blog for the first time, and I'll be the first to say that I love it! It's beautiful! Fran from Freeborboleta designed my blog and gave it an amazing face lift. I love what she designed. You really should work with her if you're looking to give your blog a fantastic design.

I can't wait to blog more. There's something about a new design that inspires me to write more. I'm thinking of more baking posts, and I also want to start writing columns about hair and make up. I can't wait to start that after I finish up writing about all of our stops in Europe.

Let me know what you think of the new design! ;)

Open Letter to Lorde on her song Royals

My open letter to Ella on her song Royals.

It's not often that I come across a song that captures my attention for hours, days, and weeks. Dare I say it, years sometimes. But your song, Royals, has done just that. I listen to it almost everyday. My husband, Bill, came home one day last week and told me I had to listen to this new song he knew I would love. Man, he was right.

It's mysterious, majestic, upbeat, and whimsical. The lyrics are fascinating to me.

You sing about how you don't come from money, and you're no stranger to living out the mundane things in life. I feel like so many people can relate to this. There's so much of life that is mundane.

I think my favorite part of the song is when you sing:

"And we'll never be royals (royals).
It don't run in our blood,
That kind of lux just ain't for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz.
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule.
Let me live that fantasy."

Let me live that fantasy. Ahhh... You explore something, that once again, a lot of people do in everyday life. They live out their own fantasy of a different life. They picture how they want their life to look in 5 or 10 years.

Your talent with songwriting and creating a message makes me want to step up my game. You are one talented, young artist. All I can say is, please keep those amazing, thought provoking songs coming. The world needs more artists like you.

A New Design Coming Soon!

Hi friends! I'm excited to say that I'm going to have a full redesign up on my blog this next week. :) Fran from freeborboleta designs designed all of it for me. I think it will bring a fresh and clean look. I decided on having a graphic banner with blue, purple, and various pink watercolor flowers. I absolutely love it and can't wait to have you all see it!

I feel that I was able to define more of what I write on my blog in the whole design process with coming up with a blurb about myself. Here's my blurb that will be under my picture :  Blogger who loves nature, animals, fitness, food, and make up.

Those are the things that I truly love, and you'll find that I write about them a lot. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Can't wait for you to see my new design next week!
